The Smoke Stack
Although it's not much of a beauty, the smoke stack at 23rd and Poplar Streets
is one of the most prominent landmarks in the neighborhood. It can be seen
from many miles away. The structure it towers over is a utility building
for the Philadelphia Nursing Home which is just
east of here.
There's not much to see on the north side of Poplar Street except the wall surrounding the Nursing Home's property. The South side is lined with typical Philadelphia row homes. As we head east to 22nd Street, we notice that the homes on the east side of 22nd are quite different in design. We'll discuss those houses in a while. Right now, we'll turn north and pass through the walkway that separates the nursing home and its utility building. We'll be turning right onto South College Avenue and headed toward The Philadelphia Nursing Home. |
